Sewer Line Safety

Natural Gas Piping and Unmarked Sewer Line Safeguards

Across the country, it is not uncommon to find “cross bores,” places where natural gas pipelines were inadvertently installed through sewer pipes. This is not a safety hazard as long as the natural gas pipeline is not disturbed. However, damage could occur when equipment is used to unclog sewer pipes.

If your sewer line appears to be blocked, do not attempt to unblock it yourself. Contact your plumber and have them call NJNG at 800-221-0051 and say “sewer” before doing any work. If you smell a natural gas odor (like that of rotten eggs), leave the premises immediately and call NJNG at 800-GAS-LEAK (427-5325) from a safe location.
