Start New Service
Please submit your request at least 10 business days before your move-in date. Appointments are scheduled in the order they are received; we will do our best to accommodate your request.
Required Steps Before Turning on Service
Now that you’re ready to enjoy the comfort and reliability of natural gas, please review required steps to ensure there isn’t a delay in getting your service turned on when you want it. These steps MUST take place BEFORE we arrive to turn on your service. (Click here for details in Spanish.)
Account Opening Charge
A $15 "account opening" charge will appear on your first bill after the natural gas service is turned on. Each month your bill will include a customer charge for service-related costs, such as bill processing and customer service, even if no actual natural gas is used. Note commercial accounts may have additional associated fees.
Note former NJNG customers must satisfy any outstanding balance before service can be activated.
A security deposit is required for new NJNG customers or those who have not previously maintained a satisfactory payment history with us.* First-time residential customers can provide a credit reference from their former natural gas or electric utility to waive the required deposit. Acceptable utility credit references must be from within the past year and show an on-time payment history.
A security deposit is required for first-time commercial customers.
*The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has determined for the 12-month period beginning January 1, 2024, the simple interest rate of 5.06% shall be applied to customer deposits received or held by New Jersey public utilities.
Request to Move Service
Please submit your request at least 10 business days before your move-in date. Appointments are scheduled in the order they are received; we will do our best to accommodate your request.
We want to help make your move run smoothly, and will read the natural gas meter at the address you are moving from to close that account. Please note:
- If the natural gas meter is inside your home, we will need access to the meter to get a final reading so that we may issue you an accurate final bill.
- We’ll then read the natural gas meter at your new address and open a new account.
- If service has been turned off, we will need access to your natural gas meter(s) and all natural gas appliances.
- For safety measures, a trained NJNG employee must enter your new home or business and light all natural gas appliances.
- There must be someone 18 years or older present.
- MAKE SURE THE WATER AND ELECTRIC ARE ON AT YOUR NEW ADDRESS BEFORE SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT WITH NJNG.
New Account Opening Charge
A $15 "account opening" charge will appear on your first bill after the natural gas service is turned on at your new address. We may request a security deposit if satisfactory credit hasn’t been established. During each month that your service is on, you’ll receive a bill that includes a minimal customer charge for service-related costs, such as bill processing and customer service, even if no actual natural gas is used.
Landlords, we can help prevent the unnecessary discontinuation of natural gas service at your residential rental property through our Landlord Notification Program. Learn more about the benefits of this program.
