Benefits of Natural Gas Vehicles
NGV America estimates there will be more than 50 million natural gas vehicles (NGV) worldwide within the next 10 years, accounting for about nine percent of the world transportation fleets. In addition:
- There are about 110,000 NGVs on U.S. roads today and more than 11 million worldwide.
- There are more than 1,100 NGV fueling stations in the United States – and approximately half are open to the public.
- In the United States, about 30 different manufacturers produce 100 models of light, medium and heavy-duty NGVs and engines.
- Industry data shows that use of natural gas for vehicles nearly doubled between 2003 and 2009, now displacing more than 300 million diesel gallon equivalents.
Environmental and Health Benefits
Today, NGVs are helping improve air quality by displacing petroleum-powered cars, vans, trucks and buses that contribute about 75 percent of the carbon monoxide pollution found in urban areas.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates NGVs:
- REDUCE carbon monoxide emissions by 90 to 97 percent.
- REDUCE carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent.
- REDUCE nitrogen oxide emissions by 35 to 60 percent.
In addition, NGVs produce fewer toxic and carcinogenic pollutants as well as little or no evaporative emissions during fueling or operation. For more information, go to the EPA’s Alternative Fuels page.
